योगश्चित्तवृत्तिनिरोधः॥२॥

“The restraint of the modifications of the mind-stuff is Yoga.”

The word Yoga comes from the Sanskrit work yuk, which means “to unite.” The ancient Yoga Sutras, written by the sage Patanjali, describe how Yoga helps us see the world and ourselves clearly, without mental judgements or interpretations. By practicing Yoga, we can unite with our deepest, truest Self – or the part of us that is pure consciousness and always at peace.

The Yoga Sutras introduce Ashtanga Yoga, also known as the Eightfold Path, which is a step-by-step guide through external practices to deeper, more subtle awareness, ultimately leading to self-realization.  Additionally, there are 6 different branches of Yoga, each offering a unique path, but all aiming for the same goal: gaining awareness of our pure consciousness and true nature.

The 6 branches, or paths, of Yoga include the following:

  • Hatha Yoga: The path of physical body study and purification

  • Bahkti Yoga: The path of devotion to higher power

  • Karma Yoga: The path of selfless action with no attachment to outcome

  • Raja Yoga: The path of mind study and purification

  • Jnana Yoga: The path of self-inquiry

  • Japa Yoga: The path of mantra repetition

  • Note: Tantra Yoga, or the path of non-duality, is also a lineage.

Ashtanga Yoga, or the Eightfold Path, includes the following:

  • Yamas: Ethical principles for interacting with the world

  • Niyamas: Self-discipline and spiritual observances

  • Asana: Physical postures

  • Pranayama: Breath control

  • Pratyahara: Withdrawing the senses

  • Dharana: Concentrating the mind

  • Dhyana: Meditation

  • Samadhi: Absorption

In my teaching, I offer a mix of asana (yoga postures from Hatha Yoga), pranayama (breathing exercises), and meditation/mindfulness practices. My goal is to not only teach the movements and techniques of Yoga but also share the deeper philosophy behind it. Ultimately, when we connect with our true selves, we rediscover a deep sense of joy and peace that is always within us.

I offer flexible, personalized sessions and am happy to adjust the practice based on your needs and interests. Whether you’re new to yoga or have experience, I can help you find what works best for you.

I have been practicing and studying Yoga and meditation for over 15 years and completed my Registered Yoga Teacher 500-Hour Certification (RYT-500) and formal Yoga and meditation training at the Integral Yoga Institute in San Francisco. My training includes:
